When demanding applications call for brightness enhancement our Display Systems Division reviews the application and develops a balanced suite of passive and active enhancement technologies that will update the AMLCD to meet the desired performance levels.

Passive brightness enhancements are preferred over active enhancements because they increase the backlight efficiency, so you get more luminance output at the same power level. Additionally, passive enhancements can be implemented at a lower per unit cost than active enhancements. With passive enhancements is it usually possible to increase a display's luminance by at least 25% and often much more.

When more luminance is needed than passive enhancements can provide, the backlighting system can be modified to incorporate active enhancements. Typical active enhancements are additional emitters (CCFLs or LEDs), a new drive scheme, and an optimized backlight reflector and enhanced light guide. With active enhancements it is possible to increase the display luminance output (brightness) by 6x (or more) of the output of the stock unit.

While in theory it is a simple concept to add more light output, in practice it is much more difficult to design a new backlight system that provides optimal performance at the lowest cost. To achieve that goal a display engineer must consider all factors and trade offs available to arrive at the optimal solution. Just a few of the considerations that must be balanced are: desired luminance, desired input power and power budget, product thermal performance, display optical performance (i.e. backlight uniformity and color balance), product environmental performance, product packaging and finished dimensions, product life cycle and maintenance, material suitability and lifetime, ease of manufacture and test, and of course, product safety and cost.

Understanding the options and making the right choices takes years of experience and a passion for elegant display solutions. Our team has a real passion for display engineering and over 20 years of experience developing highly reliable, enhanced display systems that deliver optimum performance for the price. So if your application calls for display enhancement please contact us to discuss your application.

Since the requirements for your display application may be unique, we have provided a display design consideration form that can help you to assess and refine your display requirements and operational expectations. The completion of this form will facilitate a high value discussion and allow us to accurately and efficiently match your display requirements with the right suite of display enhancements in short order.

Alternatively, you can also phone 503.690.2460 during business hours and ask to be connected with one of our application engineers. Then we can discuss your particular application and the display enhancements that might be right for your application.
